A Handful of Stars by Cynthia Lord
This books is nominated for the 2016-17 Texas Bluebonnet Award. (I'm trying to kill two birds with one stone, by putting as many Bluebonnet nominees on my challenge list!) This book is a keeper for sure. It is one that supports several themes. One main one being Compassion. Lily's dog is going blind. She wants to save money to get Lucky an operation. She paints bee boxes and sells them in her grandparents store. Lucky gets loose from her one day, and a migrant worker's daughter- Salma, helps Lily capture Lucky before Lucky gets hit by a car by giving him some of her (Salma's) sandwich. This is how their friendship begins. Blueberries is the crop that is celebrated at the annual festival in town. There is a Blueberry Queen. There are booths selling blueberry themed food and decorative items. Lily and Salma work together to make their dreams come true even though they are from very different worlds.
