Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan
This is another 2016-17 Texas Bluebonnet nominee. Traditionally, the award has gone to shorter books, even ones to be described as picture books. But, so far on my challenge this could be my favorite book! It is set up sort of like the movie "Crash" and there have been a few other movies and books with this sort of set up. There are 3 main stories. The central item in the stories is a harmonica of all things. That being said, music plays a significant role in the stories. I listened to this story being read. I really feel like that the best way to experience this book is audibly. The reason I say that is because there are accents and music that make the story literally come alive when listened to. In the end all of those main characters are brought together or "tied" together. Some of the stories are pretty rough, in topic. One is set in Europe during Hitler's beginning. One has to do with orphans. One has to do with Japanese interment camps and migrant workers. I felt like a child who reads this book should be a little older but for sure mature. I would definitley reccommend this book. You have to have a little time to donate, though as the time to listen to it is 10 hours and 30 minutes. Well worth every second!
