Z- A ZOMBIE version of a classic (Ruthi)

Eat, Brains, Love by Jeff Hart

This book switches the perspective between a zombie that is in high school and the female psychic secret agent that is trying to find him. It all started when the zombie first turned.  He and the most popular girl in the school ate most of their classmates.  This is where the "eat" and "brains" part comes into the story from the title and the "love" part comes later between the secret agent and Jake (zombie) and the popular girl and Jake.   I liked this book because it is not a cliche romance.  It is more about the adventure of the female psychic secret agent.

V=Violent (Ruthi)

Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children (Miss Peregrine's Peculiar Children) by Ransom Riggs

Jacob grew up with his grandfather telling him stories about peculiar children.  He always thought they were just stories until he a saw a mysterious "shadow" kill his grandfather.  His family thought he was crazy.  He would describe a creature as a tall lanky shadow with tentacles coming out of it's mouth.  He started going to a therapist.   The therapist reccommend that Jacob take a trip to the coast of Wales where he found a home of the peculiar children that his grandfather talked about.  The reason why I chose this for my V=Violent book is because of what happens towards the end of the book.  Read and enjoy to find out why. I like the book because it was unlike any book I had read before.  It is becoming a movie but I imagaine the movie will be terrible because of it's lack of similarity to the book.

K- No one Gets Killed (Ruthi)

Roller Girl  by Victoria Jamieson

This graphic novel is about two friends that grow apart when one joins ballet and the other joins a roller derby team. Astrid changed a lot while she was in the Roller Derby and grew even farther apart from her childhood friend.  While in the Roller Derby she met Zoey, where she and Zoey become close friends. Astrid dyes her hair blue.  I reccommend this book because it has a good underlying message which is stay true to yourself.

J= A JUNIOR novel

Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan

This is another 2016-17 Texas Bluebonnet nominee.   Traditionally, the award has gone to shorter books, even ones to be described as picture books.  But, so far on my challenge this could be my favorite book! It is set up sort of like the movie "Crash" and there have been a few other movies and books with this sort of set up.  There are 3 main stories. The central item in the stories is a harmonica of all things. That being said, music plays a significant role in the stories.  I listened to this story being read.  I really feel like that the best way to experience this book is audibly. The reason I say that is because there are accents and music that make the story literally come alive when listened to.  In the end all of those main characters are brought together or "tied" together.  Some of the stories are pretty rough, in topic. One is set in Europe during Hitler's beginning.  One has to do with orphans.  One has to do with Japanese interment camps and migrant workers.  I felt like a child who reads this book should be a little older but for sure mature.  I would definitley reccommend this book. You have to have a little time to donate, though as the time to listen to it is 10 hours and 30 minutes.  Well worth every second! Check it out or purchase on Amazon at below link!

L= A Book from a LIST

A Handful of Stars by Cynthia Lord

This books is nominated for the  2016-17 Texas Bluebonnet Award. (I'm trying to kill two birds with one stone, by putting as many Bluebonnet nominees on my challenge list!) This book is a keeper for sure.  It is one that supports several themes.  One main one being Compassion.  Lily's dog is going blind.  She wants to save money to get Lucky an operation.  She paints bee boxes and sells them in her grandparents store. Lucky gets loose from her one day, and a migrant worker's daughter- Salma, helps Lily capture Lucky before Lucky gets hit by a car by giving him some of her (Salma's) sandwich.  This is how their friendship begins. Blueberries is the crop that is celebrated at the annual festival in town.  There is a Blueberry Queen. There are booths selling blueberry themed food and decorative items.  Lily and Salma work together to make their dreams come true even though they are from very different worlds.
